Through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS), CCPB receives Market Access Program (MAP) funding to promote California cling peaches in international markets. Export market development efforts are concentrated on Canada and Mexico.

California peach growers are second to none when it comes to growing and harvesting the best quality, safest fruit under the strictest food safety regulations in the world while continuing to reduce environmental impacts and providing their workers with the highest farm wages in the nation. Help support the USA and help California Cling peach farmers survive.

Why US-Origin, California-Grown Cling Peaches?

Reasons to buy and demand that your retailer put California Cling Peaches back on the shelves

1

CA growers produce the safest and highest quality fruits and vegetables under the most stringent laws and regulations in the world.

2

In the interest of reducing impacts of climate change, farmers in California have complied with regulatory directives like purchasing reduced emission tractors and hauling fruit using reduced emission trucks.

3

California peach processors/canners use cleaner burning forklifts and more efficient boilers at their plants and ship products to customers using more fuel-efficient trucking fleets.

4

Ironically, while California peach farmers are working to find new ways to adapt to environmental and labor cost pressures in order to survive, these benefits are negated when US grocery stores and food service distributors source increasing amounts of Chinese canned fruit produced over 6,000 miles away under limited food safety and environmental regulations

5

In addition to Kroger, several other US grocery chains have elected to carry Chinese product, over US-grown product which doesn’t lower the shelf price for consumers but increases the margins for themselves. (WalMart continues to carry US-grown canned peaches)

6

American Farmers are forced to remove or abandon acreage dedicated to growing Cling Peaches due to a declining market share which is directly related to an increase in Chinese grown Cling Peaches.

“We are fighting for the American farmer. And we are fighting for the American dream and for the products made and grown with pride right here in the U.S.A.”

Kroger Should Stand Behind Their Promise

In 2019, The Kroger Company decided to sell canned and plastic fruit bowls sourced from China in many of their stores instead of selling US-Grown peach products. Kroger proudly proclaims on their corporate website:

“For many years, Kroger has worked with farmers and suppliers to bring locally produced goods to our grocery stores. Our customers value our “locally grown” and “locally produced” programs as these products are very fresh and help lessen the impact on our environment through reduced transpiration and minimized handling.”

In our view, Kroger’s decision to sell Chinese peaches is in direct conflict with these statements and we urge Kroger to source US grown Cling peach products instead.
